The army has ordered a Court of Inquiry into a case where a truck-load of its expired tank ammunition, meant for proper disposal in Jabalpur, allegedly went missing in November last year.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered and disciplinary action initiated against personnel including a Lt Colonel-rank officer, army sources here said.

The alleged incident took place in November 2011 when a batch of expired tank ammunition from Central Ordnance Depot (COD) in Jabalpur was cleared by authorities for proper disposal at a demarcated demolition area.

The expired ammunition of the armed forces are disposed as per laid down procedure. While most of these ammunition are demolished and destroyed, others which are found un-serviceable are broken down in pieces and then destroyed, the officials said.

Every batch of the ammunition is checked by competent authority before it is cleared for disposal and the process of demolition also is conducted under tight security and proper scrutiny to ensure that not even a single unit of these ammunition are accounted for, they added.
