Army major killed as grenade accidentally explodes in Kashmir

The freak incident occurred at Kangan, 40km from Srinagar, police said. An army spokesman said investigations have been ordered and details are being ascertained.

In a freak accident, an army Major was killed when a grenade slipped from his hands and exploded while he was patrolling a forest area in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir today.

Major Joginder Singh Shekawat of 24 Rashtriya Rifles died instantly, an army spokesman said adding the accident happened
at Mehlesh Bahak, some 62-km from here.

"Investigations have been ordered into Major's death," he said.

A police team has been despatched to the area to bring the body of the major.

In a similar incident, a CRPF jawan was seriously wounded when an explosive device fell from his hands and exploded on the road in Anantnag district, police said.

The jawan was on patrol duty at Qazigund, some 80 kms from here, they said adding he was admitted to hospital.
