An army Jawan allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself twice with his service rifle while on duty in Mamun Cantonment area near here, police said today.

Baljit Singh, hailing from Hoshiarpur district, attempted suicide yesterday. He received bullet injuries in his chest and shoulder and was admitted to a military hospital where his condition was stated to be serious, they said.

Singh, who belongs to 4 Sikh Light Infantry, was reportedly suffering from some tension since he joined back duty two days ago after going on leave, SHO Manoj Kumar said.

While the army refused to divulge any information, police registered a case of suicide.
