New corps commander for Kashmir lieutenant general Syed Ata Hasnain said on Thursday the army would deal with the situation in the Valley in a humanitarian manner and try to soothe aggrieved people.

“I am looking at how the army can assist the state administration in reaching out to the people and applying balm on wounds that have been suffering over a period,” the commander said on the sidelines of a function to mark Vijay Diwas in Srinagar.

Hasnain, who is only the second Muslim army commander of the Srinagar-based 15 corps in the past 20 years, noted the army’s main weapon was its heart.
