Investigators in the matter, after primary inquiry, have found that illegal immigrants from Ahmedabad may be funded by the cash-rich Non Resident Gujaratis (NRGs) in the US.
Officials in the probe, who are currently in city, cannot believe that illegal immigrants can pay lakhs of rupees for illegally entering the US.
In a telephonic conversation with DNA, RA Sanjeev, deputy commissioner of police - Airports, Delhi Police said that families, whose kin have illegally migrated to the States, can ill afford the transfer. "They must've been funded by someone known to them or in contact with them from the US," said Sanjeev.
The police have raided several houses in Ahmedabad and now have a fair idea of financial background of people who have already left the country, with help from agents. Each one of them had paid anything between Rs16 lakh-36 lakh.
The Delhi police, earlier this week, busted a human trafficking racket after a bag-full of passports was found abandoned at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi (See box). The police, so far, have arrested four people in this connection with several of their units raiding the city for further probe into the scam.
"We are searching several places in the city looking for people that may be in touch with these agents. Some of them are already under arrest," said Sanjeev.
Delhi police have arrested one Sawan Trivedi, believed to be kingpin of the entire scam, who was pushing people from Gujarat and Punjab illegally in the US through Guatemala borders.
