It has been a bad day for the BJP. It lost the assembly by-election in Karnataka, is under pressure to bring back BS Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister, and the political interloper Anshuman Mishra is betting on BJP support in the Rajya Sabha poll from Jharkhand.

A tame defense is being built for bringing back Yeddyurappa, saying once the High Court overturned the Lokayukta FIR against Yeddyurappa, there is not much of a case left to keep him out. It is now being admitted that there were enough legal lacunae in then Lokayukta Santosh Hegde’s indictment of Yeddyurappa, giving rise to the impression that the party acted in haste for the sake of brownie points and underestimating the political muscle of Yeddyurappa.

Senior party leaders have now come out openly against independent candidate Anshuman Mishra, and scotched rumours that the party ever considered supporting him who is claiming BJP support. Mishra is being seen in the party circles as a political parvenu. Mishra has a tenuous connection with the BJP through his brother who is admitted to be a party worker in eastern UP.

Apparently, Mishra, a London resident, makes every effort to ingratiate himself with political leaders from New Delhi by trying to call on them, but not always successful in his efforts to do so.

There was a meeting in Swaraj’s room in Parliament which was attended by LK Advani, Arun Jaitley and Yashwant Sinha, where it was decided to leave no room for any ambiguity about BJP’s position on Mishra. It was decided that BJP, which has 18 votes in the Jharkhand assembly, should not be transferred to Mishra.

Subsequently, The 18 votes are not sufficient to send one of its own to Rajya Sabha. This is  one of the reasons for not being able to retain outgoing BJP deputy leader SS Ahluwalia.
Later, Mishra withdrew his nomination.
