Get ready to pay more for refueling your vehicle as prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) are expected to go up by 75 paise per kg very soon. In fact, a similar increase in CNG prices is projected every month over the next six months.

GSPC Gas sells CNG in Ahmedabad at Rs37 per kg; while Adani Gas sells it for around Rs38. GSPC Gas had revised the gas prices by around Rs2.55 per kg in May, while Adani had affected a rise of 80 paise per kg.

However, a further two per cent hike is likely in CNG prices, said highly placed sources in the government.

"Petronet LNG Limited has given us projections about gas prices, which indicate that CNG prices could increase by two per cent viz. 75 paise per kg very soon," said state energy minister Saurabh Patel. Officials said that a hike of around two per cent is projected in gas prices every month for the next six months.

"This means that CNG prices could increase from the current levels to around Rs45/kg by the end of 2011. The CNG consumers would really feel the pinch in such a case," said officials.

According to estimates, Gujarat consumes around 7 to 8 lakh kg of CNG per day. GSPC Gas, Adani Gas, Sabarmati Gas and Charotar Gas collectively sell around 5 lakh kg of CNG. They are wholly dependent on imported LNG to meet their requirements.

Officials added, "Gujarat is not getting cheaper gas from D6 field in Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, and is entirely dependent on imported gas.”
