The death of a man near the Sabarmati police quarters on Tuesday led to a mob of 200 people gheraoing the police station.

Sources said that the mob was agitated over the death of one Vikram Makwana who was found dead near the police quarters. Makwana is believed to have been an alcoholic.

The trouble started when the police allegedly conducted the 'panchnama' of the body in a hurry and sent the body for post-mortem.

Makwana's family suspected something fishy in the incident, and a mob of at least 200 people, along with community leaders, then entered the Sabarmati police station on Wednesday. They started demanding that the police inspector of the station, RH Chaudhari, be suspended with immediate effect and appropriate action be taken against him.

Before things got out of hand though, the Chandkheda police and personnel of the Border Wing force and the SRP were called in for bandobast. Security was beefed up near the police station to avoid any untoward incident.

The stalemate in the matter continued for almost five hours after the mob refused to disperse. Sources said that the mob sought Chaudhari's immediate removal.

Considering the particularly sensitive situation, investigation in the matter was handed over to ACP of 'L' division, BK Ayar. Ayar said,

"The police are innocent in the matter. Makwana's body was found in the compound of the police quarters, and his blood sample detected alcohol. He was not even called by the police. A post-mortem of the body has also revealed no injury marks."

Police inspector KH Chaudhari told DNA, "Everything was done as per procedure. When we urged for the body's post-mortem, some people objected, and I had to ask them to back off as the procedure had to be followed. Even the post-mortem report says that Makwana did not sustain injuries on his body."

Officials also said that prima facie, it appears that Makwana died due to a massive intake of alcohol, which may have led him to collapse. However, sources added that more can be said only after the complete post-mortem report arrives.

Harish Waghela, a community leader who helped the kin of Makwana submit a memorandum to the ACP, said, "Makwana's body was sent for post-mortem in a hurry. Besides, the place at which the body was found also raised suspicion. We have demanded that the police inspector Chaudhari be suspended."
