In an alleged kidnapping attempt on Thursday, a woman tried to abduct a five-year-old girl near Bombay Barrel Market in Danilimda.

A mob, which gathered hearing the child's cries for help, attacked the woman and two of her accomplices. They even pelted stones at Danilimda police who had reached the place. Finally, teargas shells were lobbed to disperse the mob.

While her accomplices managed to escape, the woman was injured in the mob fury and had to be admitted to LG Hospital in Maninagar. A rioting case against 20 people was lodged with Danilimda police.

At 11am on Thursday, five-year-old Taslin Banu had come out of her Gulmohar Society residence in Danilimda to buy chocolates from a neighbourhood store. The 'abductor' woman closed in on her, luring her away with chocolates. She allegedly grabbed Taslin by her hand and tried to run away with the girl.  Taslin shouted for help and a 500-strong crowd soon gathered at the scene. The woman's two accomplices, who were nearby, escaped but she fell victim to mob fury.

A PCR van rushed to the spot to calm the melee but the angry mob started pelting stones at it. Danilimda constable Ilias Malik was injured in the attack. DCP Zone 6 Maninder Pawar reached there with his men and lobbed 31 teargas shells to disperse the mob.

The 'kidnapper' woman was later identified as Saraswati Kasai, a resident of Rakhial area in the city. She hails from Arunachal Pradesh and cannot speak Hindi or Gujarati. Hence, it is yet to be established that she had approached the girl to kidnap her. Cops have asked for services of a translator to record her statement.
