The protracted succession battle in Andhra Pradesh following YSR Reddy’s tragic death is nearing its end. In the first of a series of steps planned at resolving the standoff in the state, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday appointed chief minister K Rosaiah as the CLP leader, ending months of uncertainty on the issue.

According to senior Congress leaders, Rosaiah’s appointment is part of a strategy to stabilise the situation in the state and the party.  The other plan is to field YSR Reddy’s widow Vijayalakshmi in the byelection to the Pulivendula seat, which fell vacant after YSR’s death, and induct YSR’s son and Kadappa MP Jaganmohan Reddy as a minister of state (MoS) in the Union cabinet at a later date.

The idea of moving Jaganmohan to Delhi is also aimed at giving the new chief minister some breathing space and a chance to establish himself. Following YSR’s death, the Congress leadership has had to walk a tightrope.

The party resisted moves to immediately install the Kadappa MP, without alienating pro-Reddy sentiments, by allowing sufficient time for passions to cool down.

Simultaneously, it has also been working on YSR’s family members, like his wife Vijayalakshmi. The former CM’s old associates have also been counselling Jaganmohan Reddy not to insist on being appointed chief minister at the moment.

Senior Congress sources told DNA that a broad understanding of the changes that are now taking place was reached when Jaganmohan called on the Congress president along with his mother and other members of his family.
