Andhra Pradesh is seeking to forge a sister-state relationship with the American state of Washington in a bid to attract large-scale investments.

A 26-member delegation, led by deputy speaker Nadendla Manohar and comprising heads of many domestic and multinational companies, will reach Washington tomorrow to showcase the potential of Andhra in diverse spheres of business. Andhra will be the first state in the country to establish such a relationship with any US state.

"It is a joint effort by the state and the industry. The industry is particularly excited about the sister-state relationship with Washington as it will lead to flow of more investments into Andhra," Manohar said before embarking on the trip today.

Manohar and some members of his delegation met chief minister K Rosaiah ahead of the trip and explained the purpose of their visit.

Describing the proposed relationship as a win-win situation for Andhra and Washington, Rosaiah said, "there is a conducive atmosphere in the state for investment in various spheres. Investors could take advantage of the new industrial policy which offers the best incentives in the country."

The Hyderabad-based US consul general Cornelis M Keur noted that "AP already has more links to the US than any other Indian state and is the most pro-American state. The Washington state-Andhra Pradesh link makes sense for and will enrich both partners."

Sources in the chief minister's office said a high-level delegation from Washington state, led by its governor, is expected to visit AP later this year to take the relationship between the two states forward.

About 6,000 families hailing from AP are residing in Washington state, which are helping in forging the sister-state relationship.

The other members of the delegation include principal industries secretary B Sam Bob, special secretary to chief minister KS Jawahar Reddy, Microsoft India vice-president Srini Koppolu, GVK Bio president Manni Kantipudi, GMR Group president Srinivas Bommidala, Foundation for Futuristic Cities president Karuna Gopal and other industry heads.
