Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi allegedly received kickbacks for awarding Commonwealth Games contracts through a Hyderabad-based construction company, CBI sources told DNA.

They said the firm received Rs13 crore for ‘non-existent work’.

CBI claims that AKR constructions had carried out cabling work on behalf of Swiss Timing Private Ltd for Rs10 crore. The firm was given the timing-scoring-result (TSR) system contract for Rs141 by Games organising commitee (OC), eliminating a Spanish company which was doing the same work at Rs46 crore.

The agency has recovered several documents pertaining to financial transactions of AKR Constructions with the Swiss company. The agency carried out raids at the Banjara Hills office of AKR Constructions on April 5 seizing bank statements and other papers.

“AKR Constructions also received Rs13 crore from the Indian representatives of Swiss company for non-existent work. We have a suspicion that A Krishna Reddy’s company was a frontal company for Kalmadi to park his share of kickbacks. We are in search of Reddy, who is absconding at this moment to provide us further leads about payments,” said a senior CBI official involved in the probe.

Kalmadi is accused by police of “wrongfully restricting and eliminating competition” from other Games suppliers of timekeeping equipment. He denies any wrongdoing.

CBI to look into Shunglu findings: The CBI is looking into the findings of the Shunglu report, a copy of which has been handed over to the agency by the sports ministry.

“We have just received a copy of the Shunglu report and our investigating officials, who are already probing CWG irregularities, are closely scrutinising the findings. Very soon the probe will focus on irregularities,’’ a CBI official said.
