Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police today appealed to the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) to call off its proposed three-day rail roko' programme, and at the same time warned of stringent action against those indulging in violence during the stir.

JAC, consisting of some political parties and people's organisations, has called for a rail blockade in Telangana from October 15 to 17 to press for statehood to the region.

"I am appealing the organisers to defer the 'rail roko' indefinitely and talk to us. We will show them the (right) way (of agitation) without causing inconvenience to the public," DGP V Dinesh Reddy told reporters here.

The Centre, AP Government and Railway Board are very serious about the proposed agitation and those breaking law will be booked under the Railways Act, he maintained.

"We are not against democratic way of agitation... but whoever crosses the limit we have to be serious against them. Those indulging in violent acts will be booked under Railways Act, 1989 and such offences are non-bailable, and punishment ranges between rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and life imprisonment," the DGP explained.

About security arrangements, Reddy said state police, along with Railway police, are fully geared to provide protection to rail travellers.

"There is no dearth of police personnel to provide security to rail passengers and railway property. Bandobust is in place for tracks and also stations. Special teams will be travelling on board to look into security aspect," he said, adding personnel from Central para-military forces will be deployed to thwart any violence.
