Amphitheatre to come up in Surat

What may come as good news to artists and theatre lovers, Surat would now have an amphitheatre with all facilities. SMC has not yet decided the place where the amphitheatre will come up, but authorities have said that it will have a seating capacity of 200 people.

The Amphitheater will have a recording studio, dance practice room, training room for theater artists and singers. The seating capacity will be increased in the future. The Amphitheatre will have sufficient stage space and a big backstage area too. SMC has decided to place high quality audio and visual systems to give artists and viewers a rich feel.

"There are many small theater groups, who cannot afford halls with high rentals in the city. At present only key and big theater groups are performing plays, while people hardly know about the smaller ones. This is a step to provide them a platform to display their art before people," Municipal commissioner S Aparna, said. Aparna added that structural cost of the Amphitheatre will be above Rs3 crore but will be rented out at affordable charges.

Sources in the SMC say that the location is not finalised yet but may come up at Pal in West zone.
