Amid tight security, 3,135 pilgrims leave for Amarnath

Amid tight security after militant intercepts indicated a threat to the Amarnath yatra, a fresh batch of 3,135 pilgrims today left here for their onward journey to 3,888-metre high cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
 
The batch left from the base camp of Bagwati Nagar in a fleet of 109 vehicles amid tight security of CRPF and police at 4am, police control room (PVR) officials said here.
 
The batch, comprising 2,185 men, 694 women, 77 children and 179 sadhus, had already crossed Batote and were expected to reach its respective destinations to Pahalgam and Baltal camp by the evening, they said.
 
With today's batch, as many as 34,939 pilgrims have left for Amarnath from Jammu base camp.
 
Over 1.42 pilgrims have paid obeisance at the naturally formed ice lingum of Shiva.
 
The security enroute Amarnath from Jammu has been beefed up in view of the intelligence input that Amarnath yatra can be targeted by the militants.
