The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to use the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) model for solid-waste collection in the New West Zone of the city. At present, the AMC uses the door-to-bin and bin-to-dumping site model for solid-waste management. This method is costly compared to the SMC’s system in which contractors collect solid waste from the gates of societies and take it to dumping sites.

Chairman of the standing committee of the AMC, Asit Vora said that the civic body had a look at the presentation made by the SMC on solid-waste management. “We would make necessary changes according to the habits of the residents of Ahmedabad,” he said, also adding that if the new system proves to be successful, it will be replicated across the city.

Vora further said that the civic body may rope in one of the contractors from Surat for solid-waste disposal. At present, a lot more irregularities have come to the notice of the authorities regarding collection of solid waste. Some of the contractors have shown more than the actual number of houses from where they collect solid waste. The civic body is carrying out an audit and based on this report, it would recover around 20% money from the contractors.

Moreover, the civic body passed proposal to allot work contracts to collect solid waste from Ranip, Ghatlodia, Bodakdev, Thaltej, Sarkhej and Jodhpur areas in the new west zone. The work contracts would be given to the first lowest bidders in the respective wards. The contract will be initially for six months and will be extended for two years which is subjected to the satisfactory work done by the contractors.

According to sources, the civic body had floated tenders earlier also and allotted work contracts at the cost of Rs8 per month per house. However, there was a dispute over deposit and earnest money. Work was given to seven non-government organisations.

However, later the civic body changed terms and conditions and had also not given any information about the technical aspects such as to depute one tractor per unit to the concerned parties, alleged one of the contractors on condition of anonymity. He also said that because of this the NGOs did not start work, and that was why the AMC had blacklisted these NGOs.
