Civic body reclaims35,000 sq metres of land in a massive demolition drive.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday demolished 79 homes in the Shahwadi area that had been built illegally on a plot owned by the civic body.
Around 35,000 sq metres of land was reclaimed by the estate department of the south zone of the AMC in a massive demolition drive that lasted five hours. The AMC took the help of the Ahmedabad rural police as well as the DCP (zone I) to carry out the demolition.
The estate department of the south zone had earlier received an application drawing attention to the illegal construction on the AMC plot near Zaid Row Houses in Shahwadi. “Seventy-nine houses were built on the plot owned by the AMC, which had been reserved for the purpose of a sewerage treatment plant,” said IK Patel, the in-charge deputy municipal commissioner of the south zone.
None came forward to stop the demolition of the residential colony constructed on around 4,000 sq metres of land. Considering the size of the colony, it is believed that the construction had been on for at least six months.
“After receiving the information, we sought police protection and started the demolition so that innocent buyers would not be victimised,” Patel said. As the homes were built on a plot owned by the AMC, there was no requirement for any notice to be served, he said. The estate department took the help of 150 police personnel and estate officials of the five zones of the AMC.
Six JCB machines and two bulldozers were used during the five-hour-long demolition operation. The plot has now been surrounded by a fencing wall to avoid any form of encroachment, Patel said. As the civic body does not have any information on who was behind the illegal construction, no police complaint has been filed. However, officials of the estate department are trying to find out who was behind the construction.
