Between 2008 and 2010, AMC spent Rs228.67 lakh on lawyers' fee. Despite spending such a huge amount, it lost 1,180 cases. These figures were presented by leader of Opposition Badruddin Shaikh during his speech on the second day of AMC budget discussion. Shaikh suggested that the lawyers should be changed and AMC should have some selection criteria for lawyers.

AMC has spent a lot over consulting and designing in engineering department. Presenting the figures, Shaikh said that in the current year, the road and building committee has planned work of Rs434.06 crore while the water committee has planned works of Rs236.49 crore. He suggested that the consultant-cum-design unit should be created in the engineering department.

In the last three years, Rs 780.11 crore has been spent on roads, yet the city roads are washed off in monsoon and get damaged during monsoon, Shaikh pointed out.

The project of 24x7 water supply in the city is just on paper, said Shaikh. He added that despite spending crores of rupees on water projects, the supply was not regular enough. From 2007-08 to 2011-12, the state government spent a total of Rs147.35 crore. Due to faulty design of storm water drainage line from Amraiwadi to Behrampura, the drainage line is always filled with water.

He said that AMC spends a lot on maintenance of street lights every month. Presently, three companies have been given the contract of street light maintenance and the expenditure incurred on this is quite huge. Shaikh suggested that tenders should be re-invited so that others get a chance.

"Though the state government takes credit for riverfront project, it should be ashamed that it cannot provide assurance to HUDCO for loan repayment," said Shaikh. Every three months, Rs22 crore interest amount is levied, resulting in an annual burden of Rs88 crore. It is also important to introduce new policy for the health licence in place of the existing one, he said.
