Ahmedabad is rich in cultural wealth gained in the last 600 years of its existence. However, this ethnicity needs to be shown to today's Amdavadi to make him know what his city is all about.

What better way than display it on the ever-bustling main roads?

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is considering painting the periphery walls of city's roads with various aspects of the city's culture. This will also lend an attractive appeal to the rather mundane walls in the city.

A similar wall-painting activity happened at Kankaria Lake, 132-feet Ring Road and the nodal Satellite Road during Kankaria Carnival last year. Apart from highlighting culture, these paintings give out social messages too.

However, AMC is not keen on moving ahead with the plan immediately. According to municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra, the civic body will check impact of weather on existing paintings and then take proper steps to go ahead with the plan.

"We want to check whether these paintings withstand the monsoon season. These are supposed to be water-proof," said Mohapatra. If these paintings pass the 'water test', we will move ahead with our plan, added the municipal commissioner.

AMC has decided to add 6 km to existing stretch for this activity but hasn't identified stretches to be painted. "We are yet to identify 'paint-able' walls, which will be done post monsoon," said Mohapatra.

Apart from beautifying walls, this endeavour acts as vent to an artist's creativity. At the same time, it is easy on AMC's pockets. "Not much expenditure will be incurred by AMC in the process. Only smoothening of the walls and colours for artists will be the costs involved," said Mohapatra.

Ahmedabad currently has 4.5 km of walls covered with such paintings. These paintings depict culture, heritage and popular personalities from state. Messages involving social aspects are also splashed on these walls.

These paintings have received much appreciation from city-folks.
