Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is facing a severe land crisis. A recent instance is the issue of scarcity for setting up 49 prefabricated anganwadis in different zones of the city. This, as a result, has forced the civic body to extend contract deadline for the project to April 2012.

The contractor, roped in for setting up prefabricated anganwadis at 152 locations in the city, has been able to set up only 102 of them till now as the civic body has been able to give him possession of land at only these many locations, and that too after much delay. AMC has cited opposition from locals, high-tension electricity wires and absence of estate department's opinion for possession as major hurdles in the project. Sintex Industries was roped in for this project.

AMC, as part of Garib Samruddhi Yojna, had planned to set up 800 anganwadis in two years. It had surveyed 304 locations as per need of the slums in the city. According to work order passed July 30, 2010, prefabricated anganwadis were decided to be set up at 152 locations by July 29, 2011. However, only 102 saw light of day in the stipulated time with a nine-month extension sought for constructing the rest. Municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra has set April 29, 2012 as the new deadline.

The east zone of the city has been problematic for AMC as it could get possession of only seven locations out of 33 surveyed in the area. North zone has just10 locations available for these anganwadis. AMC finds it difficult to get possession of seven sites in south zone and three locations each in west zone and new west zone.

It has also faced denial for opinion from estate department and Ahmedabad School Board in east and north zones of the city.
