The Ambedkar bridge across river Sabarmati that was
inaugurated last year has become a favourite of criminals fleeing the police after committing crime in western Ahmedabad. Sources in the city police say that the new bridge has become the preferred escape route of criminals.

Last week, some chain snatchers and fake policemen were arrested from this bridge and its surrounding areas. Sources said that as the other bridges that connect the old city with the new are under strict police surveillance, criminals have started using Ambedkar bridge to escape the police. The bridge links Chandranagar in western Ahmedabad and Danilimda in the eastern part of the city.

"Our analysis indicates that, earlier, criminals tended to use Sardar bridge and Ellisbridge to escape the police," said Satish Sharma, joint commissioner of police, sector 1. "But now because of strict vigilance on these bridges, they have switched to Ambedkar bridge to escape after committing a crime."

Sources say the police have noticed that criminals in the city-right from thieves and chain snatchers and bootleggers to fake policemen-generally belong to eastern Ahmedabad which is relatively poorer. But they commit crime in the posh localities of the western Ahmedabad.

The sources further said that after the inauguration of Ambedkar bridge, a number of criminals had been arrested from Chandranagar and its surrounding areas where a cluster of slums is located. The bridge also connects western Ahmedabad to Maninagar and Amraiwadi which are among the city areas worst affected by criminals.

"Of late, we too have notice this," said Ellisbridge police inspector BK Purohit "Criminals, after striking in posh localities such as Ellisbridge, Satellite and Vastrapur, have been using the Amedkar bridge to escape the police."
