The upcoming Amarnath yatra seems to be heading towards a confrontation with Baba Amarnath Yatri Niyas (BAYN), an amalgam of about 30 religious, social and trade organisations, today vowing to commence the pilgrimage from June 15 instead of June 29 announced by the shrine board.

The Niyas also launched online registration for the yatra on its website 'www.amarnathyatriniyas.org'.

"The online registration has been launched for the Amarnath yatra by the Niyas from today. The yatra would be started from June 15," North Region's Organising Secretary, Kailash Chander told reporters at the function here.

The registration process of devotees for this year's Amarnath Yatra has commenced from various counters set up by the Niyas at all the tehsil headquarters in Jammu province since May 1, 2011, whereas the online registration started from today, BAYN President Surinder Mohan Aggarwal said.

They said the yatra would begin from June 15 for the two-month period even as Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) headed by Governor N N Vohra announced commencement of the yatra from June 29.

Various Hindu organisations have criticised the shrine board's decision to curtail the yatra by 15 days. A delegation of the Amarnath Yatri Niyas had last month presented a memorandum to SASB chief R K Goyal in this regard.

VHP has also threatened to start the yatra from June 15 if the Governor fails to "rectify" his decision.

The SASB, however, has defended its decision saying the step was taken to ensure safe and smooth conduct of the arduous pilgrimage.
