National Institute of Design's (NID's), South Asian Short and Documentary Film Festival, Alpavirama 2011, organised by the film and video communication club of NID will be held during February 18-20, 2011, at NID.

It will be organised as part of the institute's golden jubilee celebrations. Films from Pakistan and Bangladesh will also be a part of the fest.

Arun Gupta, senior faculty of film and video discipline and festival director said, "Alpavirama 2011 will have four sections: competition, retrospective, special package and seminar. While we have already decided upon the competition and special package, we would also finalise the retrospective and seminar sections of the film festival, by the first week of January."

The competition was open to short fiction and documentary films which shall be not less than three minutes and not more than 30 minutes long.

"175 entries were received from India and south Asia of which 31 best are selected for the competition. We have an international jury, where we have members from Bhutan and Pakistan to judge the movies and choose the winners. We had also invited institutes from Hong Kong to participate in the event. Here too we received a good response. Ten best entries would be selected for the festival from the list."

Gupta added, "The aim of bringing in films from neighbouring countries was to foster the relationship between the countries and also bring about a better understanding among all.

China and India are going to be the focus of the world in near future. We chose Hong Kong as it is China's symbolic entranceway. It is also an interesting community with a mix of cultures such as communism, capitalism, expatriates, locals, Cantonese and Mandarin.
