Amid noisy scenes coupled with walkout by opposition AIADMK, Ohm Sakthi Segar of AIADMK was today suspended from the Puducherry assembly for a day for his remarks against Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Suspending the member, speaker R Radhakrishnan said Segar had not come forward to tender an apology for his remarks. The Speaker said none should speak disparagingly against any leader or party as such remarks would only bring down the status of the territorial Assembly.

Segar along with the other two AIADMK legislators A Anbalagan and MV Vaithilingam protested the ruling. Anbalagan said deputy speaker AV Sreedharan, who had conducted proceedings yesterday, had already expunged the alleged comments and there was no justification to revive the issue.

Chief minister V Vaithilingam rose to ask Segar to tender an apology. Segar made some remarks against Vaithilingam and the House was drowned in noisy scenes with Congress and DMK legislators on the one hand and the AIADMK, on the other, shouting at each other.

Vaithilingam, who earlier tabled a motion seeking Segar's suspension for his `objectionable comment yesterday during the debate on the motion of thanks to the LT Governor for his address, then moved the motion. Following the speaker's ruling, AIADMK members staged a walkout.

Earlier, opposition leader AMH Nazeem (DMK) sought to know what action had been contemplated against Segar particularly when he had not tendered apology despite repeated pleas from the chair.
