The recent cases of thefts by youngsters point to a dangerous trend, as more and more teenagers and students are getting involved in such activities to earn money to fulfil their never-ending list of demands. On Sunday, an engineering student was caught with a stolen Bajaj Pulsar.

Vallabh Vidyanagar (VV) police caught three teenagers on Sunday, studying in standard XII, with ten stolen car emblems. Similarly, in May, Satellite police too had caught five students in their early 20s with stolen car emblems.

On Sunday, VV police busted a gang of teens involved in car emblem thefts in Anand and Vidyanagar regions. According to VV police sub-inspector DK Rao, all the apprehended teenagers are standard XII students and belong to middle class families.

"One of the kids is from Bochasan village and the other two are from the city. They confessed that their need for some extra cash to enjoy life was the reason behind their deed," said Rao. On Sunday afternoon, Vidyanagar police were conducting vehicle checks near Janta crossroads when a teenager tried to speed away from the police on his Honda bike. After chasing him down, cops recovered four stolen car emblems from him.

Later, he confessed two of his friends were also involved in the thefts with him. The cops nabbed them and recovered six more emblems, which they had stolen from parked luxury cars. These emblems are from Skoda, Nissan, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Ford cars. "Usually, these emblems cost Rs10,000 to 20,000, but these boys would sell them for just Rs3,000 in the grey market" said Rao.

On Sunday, Ahmedabad police caught an engineering student with two stolen bikes. On Monday police stopped Nikunj Makwana, 21, near Chandkheda crossroads while he was passing on a Bajaj Pulsar bike. Police asked for ownership documents of the bike, which he failed to provide. Later, Makwana confessed to having stolen the bike from the ONGC campus a few weeks back. He also revealed that he had stolen a Karizma bike earlier from New CG Road and it was hidden near his residence at Motera.

The cops recovered both the bikes and registered a case against him. "Makwana is studying in semester 6 of diploma in electrical engineering at Sigma Institute of Engineering in Vadodara. He wanted to enjoy his college life and needed money as he belongs to a lower-middle class family. His father is primary school teacher in Ahmedabad," said Chandkheda police inspector SB Trivedi.
