Residents of the posh Manichandra society have sought inquiry by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by filing a petition before the Gujarat high court in connection with misuse of power by IPS officer GL Singhal family, who is alleged to have attempted to encroach on the common plot of the society.

After primary hearing of the petition, justice MR Shah has issued notices to the state government, home secretary, director general of police (DGP), city police commissioner and Inspector of the Ghatlodia police station. Further hearing has been kept on December 7.

Manisha, wife of GL Singhal, Superintendent of  Police (SP) of Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), had recently bought lavish bungalow in the Manichandra society part-1. The problem began last week when the Singhal family allegedly started construction on the common plot.

When the society members tried to stop the cop's family from making encroachments in the society, Singhal's wife Manisha lodged a complaint before the Ghatlodia police against society members for issuing death threats and using abusive words.  At the same time, the police refused to lodge a cross-complaint moved by society members against the Singhals.

The society members contended in the petition that the cop has instilled fear in them by misusing his power and using undue influence to the local police, and so an independent inquiry should be initiated in the issue.

SV Raju, senior counsel appearing for the Manichandra society, submitted before the high court that, Singhals have purchased the bungalow at the ostensible value of Rs1.5 crore thought its market value is Rs8 crore, in the name of Manisha Singhal.

Raju further submitted that, when the society members held the meeting to stop the alleged enroachment, Manisha Singhal appeared there and allegedly threatened them detention by the police.

After 20 minutes of the meeting, police personnel came from Ghatlodia police station and asked the society members to come to Memnagar police chowky to give their reply.

Not only that, on account of GL Singhal, a large number of police personnel were stationed at the society creating scare among its members. Though they lodged a complaint before Ghatlodia police and intimated the DGP and other top officers of the state, no action has been taken against the Singhals.

Meanwhile, Manisha Singhal told DNA that the society members were unduly harassing them on one or the other issue. "They have not given us share certificates though I paid the entire amount of transfer fee. I had even written a letter to the municipal commissioner to take action against illegal construction in the society. Apart from that, we wrote to them requesting them to ask us if we have done anything wrong or hurt their sentiments, but nobody gave us any reply."
