The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which was all set to free parking space on the city's plush CG Road, was in for disappointment yet again.

The city police, whose help was sought by the civic body's estate department officials for carrying out the act, refused to accompany them on the assignment — resulting in the demolition being postponed.

The AMC was all set for the drive, and had even prepared its officials for the mammoth task. However, with the city police's refusal to assist them, the drive has been put on hold for two days.

"This was the third time in a month that we sought police protection for our demolition drive on CG Road, and were denied the same. Going by our previous experiences of conducting demolition drives on this road, we do not want to go without enough police protection," said a senior official of the estate department in the West zone.

Civic officials say they will wait for a nod from the police, in order to restart their demolition drive in the west zone of the city. This includes posh areas like CG Road, Navrangpura and Naranpura.
On the other hand, the cops on their part, say that they haven't received any intimation from the municipal corporation seeking police bandobast.

"We have not received any information regarding this bandobast," said deputy commissioner of police, police control room, DH Parmar to DNA.  Parmar said that whenever police bandobast is asked for, the cops make it a point to provide the same.

Deputy commissioner of police for Zone 1, Brajesh Jha, under whose jurisdiction CG road falls, told DNA that no intimation has been made to them in this regard. "If the police control room had intimated us regarding the said police protection, we would have provided the same," he said.

Sources say that the police may have been unable to assist civic body officials in their demolition drive, on account of being deployed to ensure peaceful proceedings at the district panchayat polls taking place on Thursday.
