Shahpur police, on Monday evening, caught two persons including a woman with 30 birds near Delhi Chakla. The area is known for its illegal bird trade in the city.

The deputy commissioner of police for zone-2 learnt from his informers that two persons with a large metal cage were seen near RC High School, Delhi Chakla. The duo was trying to sell foreign as well as Indian birds trapped inside cages to people.

Based on a tip-off, Shahpur police rushed to the spot at 7:30 pm and caught one Sunil Dantani (27), resident of Mina Bazaar in Meghaninagar and Narmada Dantani (35), resident of Bhoiwada in Shahpur.

Police also recovered a metal cage with 10 Australian Budgerigars and 20 Indian Ringneck parrots, trapped inside cages.

Shahpur police booked both the accused under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. After the birds were rescued, the police informed the forest officials, who in turn transported the birds to Kankaria Zoo for further care and treatment.

During investigation, the cops learnt that Narmada used to only make bird cages but she got into the bird trade after she met Sunil a few months back.

When asked who gave them the birds, the duo didn't reveal the source name. However, they said that an unidentified person sold these birds to them for Rs300 and that they were planning to sell them at a big profit in the retail market.
