Every time a commuter hits the road in Ahmedabad, he jumps, not in excitement, but due to badly shaped bumps without indicators. However, commuters can heave a sigh of relief as Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) along with the city traffic department is planning to have standardised speed bumps across the city.

Roads across the city have bumps of different dimensions, some sharp enough to send the vehicles jumping on the road and causing accidents. Be it two wheelers, four wheelers or buses, the sharp-edged speed bumps, besides irritating commuters, can lead to back aches and other problems in the long run. Hence, the recent announcement by the civic body to have standard speed bumps on all the roads has brought the much-needed relief to citizens.

Speaking to DNA, AMC municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “On many roads speed bumps have been constructed without the knowledge of AMC or the permission of traffic department. To stop this, we are working towards having speed bumps of same dimensions for all the roads of the city.”
Mohapatra further said that to put up a speed bump, there is a procedure under which the request by public is sent to the traffic department.

The civic body plans to retain this procedure with some alterations to decide on the common type and size of speed bumps. "We are working on designing the speed bumps which will be according to the road manual and standards of Indian Road Congress (IRC), which is a national body.

The idea, added Mohapatra, is to have a standardised code for speed bumps across the city. Mohapatra said, "We are working on it. The report being prepared has guidelines for making the speed bumps, including the height of the bump, its width, measurements and necessary markings for its visibility etc. The report will soon be completed and will be sent to the traffic department." Once the report is sent to traffic department, the work will begin soon.

Tired of sharp bumps in the city? Tell the traffic department about your grievances. The department has shared the procedures for complaining against the illegally constructed speed bump which creates lot of trouble for commuters.

Speaking to DNA, DCP of traffic department, Siddharth Khatri said, "The citizens can complain about the illegally constructed speed bumps to the traffic department by dialing the toll-free traffic helpline number 1095. We will take action on the complaint and remove the bump. Also, residential societies that construct the speed bumps without our permission are fined and the expense for removing the bump is charged from them."

Khatri elaborated that if the residential societies or the civic body want a speed bump on nearby roads, they will have to take permission from the traffic department. "Once such a request arises, we check the area and the roads to decide whether there really is need for a speed bump. In case of school nearby or some of the accident-prone areas, we grant permission immediately."

He further said that along with the speed bumps, there should be a signboard of 'Bump ahead' as well as markings on the bump.

Khatri added that citizens could write to the deputy police commissioner of traffic after which further action would be taken.
