Civic body's health committee has ruled that all food packets in shops must state manufacturing/expiry dates.
While the city will rejoice in Diwali celebrations, it will be a testing time for shop owners and sweet vendors as the civic body has decided to take good care of its citizens' health this festive season.
AMC is making it compulsory for all manufacturers to have date and 'best before use' mentioned on their food packets. The health committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday had a meeting in which it was decided that the food products of sweet shops and others should have labels which mention the date of manufacture and expiry ('best before date').
Addressing the media, chairman of health committee, Dr Suresh Patel said, "This is the first time that such a decision has been taken. We are keeping in mind that citizens purchase variety of food products during Diwali.
This decision is applicable to sweet shops and all other local outlets selling packed food products."
So then, will any action be taken against those shops which break the rule? Dr Patel says, "The officers will carry out checking and shops found selling goods without labels on the packets of food products will be sealed by the AMC."
When DNA spoke to some shop owners, a member
of Ahmedabad Mithai Farsan Association said, "We have not been intimated about this by the civic body. Once we receive such notice, the members of our association will meet and then decide on it.
As far as my shop is concerned, farsan (snacks) packets contain labels with all the details. Also, the sweets are prepared fresh and packed as per the requirement of the customer and in front of him/her. However, sealing the shops is not a good idea. If health of the citizens is so important, then the AMC should seal all shops of the city and leave no space for adulterated food."
Another sweet shop owner requesting anonymity said, "In my shop, we provide fresh sweets and farsan, which are packed in front of the customer as per their mentioned weight."
