It seems that the Ahmedabad city police commissioner is not happy with the way criminal cases are being detected these days in different police zones of the city. To increase the detection ratio, six new detection cells working on the lines of the crime branch are likely to come up for all the six police zones of the city!

According to sources, a plan regarding the same has already been tabled by police commissioner Amitabh Pathak and the joint commissioner of police (JCP) in sector 1 and 2 have been asked to provide inputs on the same.

The development happened some five days ago.

Sources said this idea has been mooted by the police commissioner who wishes to increase the crime detection rate in the city. Sources said that the idea is to give each deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in all the six zones a separate detection cell to help crack special cases in their jurisdiction.

However, there is no clarity about the number of members in such a cell but sources said it will have at least a dozen staff including an inspector, sub-inspector and several constables. Confirming the fact, joint commissioner of police, sector-1, Satish Sharma said that the move is a welcome one as it will help DCPs detect crimes of special nature in their jurisdiction.

In fact, the idea has been borrowed from New Delhi police where DCPs have their own detection teams.

It should be noted that district level policing, every superintendent of police has been given a special detection cell to crack local cases involving crimes of extraordinary nature.  However, highly placed sources said that the move does not make sense when there is a shortage of staff.  "Ideally, there should be a separate detection team for DCPs but first there is a need to increase the staff in the department," the source said.

The source said that even in the existing system, a DCP can form special squads to crack special cases.
