For the first time, city police will host a DG Cup for equestrian events in the first week of March. The event will take place from March 2 to 4.

All mounted units of the Gujarat police will be participating in the event. "Some 200 to 250 riders are expected to participate in the event. There are also some categories like the barrel race which is open to private participants as well," said Shamsher Singh, JCP Special branch. The top cop said that apart from the trophy, a cash prize may also be in the offing. "But the matter is still under consideration and nothing has been finalised on that count," said Singh.

The mounted units of the Gujarat police have Kathiawari, Marwari and thoroughbred horses with them. "Last September, we had purchased some 20 thoroughbreds as well," said Singh. Apart from this, Gujarat will also host the all India police equestrian meet. The state had last hosted the event in 1996.

LF Vasava, PI mounted at the Ashwa Taleem Shala said, the DG Cup is a good way for the Gujarat police to practice for the all India police equestrian meet.

"Some 25 to 30 teams and around 150 horses will take part in the event. The DG Cup can also help us in zeroing in on the best men and horses to compete in the All India Police Equestrian Meet," said Vasava.
