A constable attached with the Sarkhej police station was arrested for accepting bribe on Sunday morning by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials.

He had allegedly asked for bribe to ensure 'soft behaviour' towards a man arrested in connection with a land grabbing case.

Constable Gordhan Prajapati was caught red handed after ACB laid a trap for him following a complaint by one Ajit Pratap Chauhan.

The issue relates to a land grabbing case in which Mahendrasinh Jhala, Sanjay Thakore and another man were arrested by the Sarkhej police after the three allegedly kidnapped Malben of Muhmeeda village in rural Ahmedabad.

They then allegedly forced her sign documents and grabbed her land. Thakore was first arrested followed by Mahendrasinh on March 3.

It was then that constable Prjapati asked for Rs5 lakh from Mahendrasinh to ensure that the cops were not too harsh on him while he was in lockup.

Prajapati also allegedly told Mahendrasinh that PI MM Jhala had sent him to convey the message. Surprised at this, Mahendrasinh informed his cousin Ajit Pratap Chauhan about the demand for bribe, who in turned approached the ACB on Saturday night.
As planned, five members of the ACB team sent complainant Chauhan to Sarkhej police station on Sunday morning with Rs1.5 lakh.

Unsuspecting Prajapati willingly accepted the money but was soon nabbed by the officials. It must be noted that since constable Prajapati also made a mention of police inspector Jhala, he too was questioned.

"We have arrested the constable but not the police inspector as at the moment he does not seem to be involved. However, if he is found guilty, we will also arrest him," said AJ Jhala, PI, ACB, Ahmedabad.
