Arrested IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's wife, Shweta Bhatt, on Monday said she had written a letter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking security for her husband as she feared for his life. "I am worried about his safety. He could be manhandled by the police," she said.

She has also alleged in the letter that her husband was being harassed "under the direct supervision of the Ahmedabad police commissioner Sudhir Sinha."

Shweta Bhatt further said that under the Modi government, "many police officers were granted extension and they were used to achieve illegal political objectives and to take vindictive action against upright people and obstructing the course of justice." She also accused Sinha of misusing the extension in service granted to him, by acting against the Bhatts.

Talking to mediapersons at her residence on Monday, Shweta Bhatt said that the central government should ensure before giving extension to officers why extension had been sought for them. She further alleged that the Modi government had humiliated them and that Bhatt was being punished by the state government for speaking up. "I want to ensure the safety of my husband and for that I had written to Chidambaram," she said.

"As a wife and mother of two kids, I wish to appeal to the central government to immediately provide security to me and my family by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)," she added. Sudhir Sinha, who was supposed to retire in August 2011, was granted a 3-month extension by the central government.
