Although rains have stopped, the after-effects of the incessant downpour are beginning to show. Whether it is the water-logged areas or the unhygienic localities owing to overflowing garbage that are to blame for the spread of mosquitoes in monsoon, many citizens are suffering from dengue.

According to the data shared by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the number of cases of dengue in the city on Thursday went as high as 19. The number of cases of dengue which remained zero during the whole week suddenly went up to 17 cases.

Also, the number of cases registered in hospitals with dengue disease during the whole month is 27. The number of cases of dengue for the entire year stood at 74. The 19 cases of dengue registered on Thursday had mainly been reported from Odhav and Vastral areas of the city.

With dengue on the rise, other diseases like gastroenteritis, malaria, typhoid and falciparum cannot be far behind and the numbers of cases are in double digits as well. On Thursday, the number of falciparum cases recorded in city hospitals was 13, while 16 cases of malaria were reported. Similarly, three typhoid cases were registered on Thursday and cases of gastroenteritis were as high as 25.

When enquired on the measures taken by AMC for the sudden spurt in diseases, city municipal commissioner, Guruprasad Mohapatra said, "As compared to last year, falciparum cases are undoubtedly on a rise. But this situation is being faced not only in the city but across the state and country."

Mohapatra further shared that instructions have been given for conducting intensive surveillance in different areas twice daily, instead of the only once earlier. The officials will check various sites of the city where water logging prevails and will take action accordingly.

"Also, the number of handheld fogging machines will be increased so as to enable every zone of the city to avail of a machine,” added Mohapatra.
