Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to curb the menace of stray dogs before the upcoming monsoon season. The deputy municipal commissioner, Captain Dilip Mahajan, said, "After shortlisting the agencies, we want to start the work on or before May 1. We want to cover as much ground as possible."
The time limit of the sterilisation process is crucial as the breeding season of dogs usually starts during the monsoon period. They have to be sterilised before the monsoon.

AMC's Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) has invited bids from all interested agencies and NGOs involved in such work. CNCD is hoping to get maximum number of agencies to participate in the task of sterilising street dogs of 64 wards of Ahmedabad. According to a recent survey, the number of strays are more than 2.4 lakh.

According to the superintendent of CNCD, Dhanjibhai Chaudhari, the number could be well beyond that figure as many new wards were formed after several villages were included in the corporation's limits. "We are sure that the figure will be more than 2.4 lakh after the inclusion of villages," said Chaudhari. However, CNCD is not sure about the estimated number of dogs to be sterilised in the given time limit.

"We can't say how many dogs will be sterilised, because it depends on the number of parties showing interest," said Chaudhari. He added that CNCD is planning to allocate work to all the parties who turn up with bids.

To attract the maximum number of agencies, AMC has placed the advertisement in all the major publications.
