Ahmedabad civic body's health dept raids 19 food shops

With the festive season of Diwali round the corner, raids by the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have also seen a drastic rise. The department has been targeting sweet shops and other establishments trading in eatables.
On Monday, the department carried out raids at 19 places in the city. The health department raided shops located in different areas of Kalupur, Sarangpur, and Khadia-Raipur among others.

"The department collected food samples from these shops and sent them to the laboratory for testing," said an official of AMC's health department.

The department carries out raids on various food establishments and parlours on a regular basis but has increased the frequency in the last three months considering the festive season. The department collected samples of mawa, sweets and silver foil covering used on sweets.  "The health department has so far found that of the food samples sent for testing around 29 were of sub-standard quality,” said an official.
