The residents of Sarkhej, Makarba, Mematpur and Fatehwadi can heave a sigh of relief as AMC plans to lay drainage line in these areas. The work of laying drainage work is likely to start after
Diwali.

The areas falling under New West Zone of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have open drainage systems like other semi-urban towns of the state. The open drains are used to drain off water used for washing and other purpose, while sewerage water is drained into soak pits. Open drains emit foul smell and also serve as breeding ground for mosquitoes causing vector-borne diseases, said an AMC official.

The civic body now has plans to provide drainage network in these areas at a cost of around Rs3.90 crore. "The open drainage will be covered securely and will be connected to main drainage lines," said Jatin Patel, chairman of AMC's water supply and sewerage committee. He said that a proposal has already been prepared for this and will be passed soon.

The civic body will lay drainage pipelines of around 600 mm to 1200 mm diameter in this area. The work is likely to start after Diwali and is expected to be completed by March 2012,
said Patel.

The main sewerage line network is part of Package 42 of sewerage network under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), while the internal network will be laid from the capital budget of the zone, said an official.
The civic body's move is expected to create hygienic conditions for the residents of these areas and reduce mosquito-related diseases. Four years after being included in the AMC zone, the residents of these areas have hardly got any facilities. Opposition Congress had organised a protest at New West Zone's office on Monday demanding more facilities in these areas.
