The chairman of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), Dr RM Kharb, minced no words while asking the city's municipal body to get its act together in catching and sterilising stray dogs.

Dr RM Kharb, on Wednesday, took first hand information about the progress in the 2.4 lakh stray dog sterilisation project. On meeting with top officials involved in the task, he expressed his dissatisfaction at the work's dismal pace. "AMC's actions in this matter are not enough. I asked them to get their act together and take immediate steps," said Dr Kharb.
The AWBI had signed an MoU with AMC regarding the stray dog sterilisation. During his daylong discussions with officials and deputy municipal commissioner Dilip Gor, he checked AMC's report card about their efforts to start the sterilisation before the monsoons.
However, he expressed his dissatisfaction at whatever had been done till date.
On March 25, AMC's Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) had invited bids from interested contractors, agencies and NGOs involved in dog sterilisation. CNCD hoped to get maximum number of agencies to participate in this task. However, only 4 NGOs turned up for the job. The CNCD itself is under staffed to conduct the work of catching the dogs, as they have only 5 vans and 28 labourers. This situation has severely hampered the project, which was supposed to be finished before the advent of the monsoons.
"I know it is very late, but better late then never. I told the AMC to join hands with NGOs, rather than designating the whole work to themselves," said Dr Kharb. He also expressed his dissatisfaction at AMC's tendering process. "NGOs are not doing business, so how can you invite them through tenders? I suggested them to directly approach NGOs and conduct joint operations to meet the deadline," said Dr Kharb.
DYMC Dilip Gor assured Dr Kharb about quick and joint action by AMC in coming days. "As per his suggestion, our staff will be trained by HSI and we will also conduct joint operations to catch and sterilise the strays," said Dilip Gor, who is the sterilisation project in-charge.
