Here's good news for the 15,000 passengers who use smart card while traveling in Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). With a view to providing its passengers a hassle-free journey, Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) is thinking of introducing zero balance smart card.

Currently BRTS charges Rs78 from a commuter for issuing a smart card -- Rs25 for the issue of the card and Rs28, the maximum amount, for traveling from the starting point till the end station of the BRTS.

Apart from these two amounts, the minimum recharge for a smart card is Rs25. Thus the total amount which a commuter has to spend on the BRTS is Rs78 for travelling a few kms.

Utpal Padia, executive director of AJL, told DNA about the plan of introducing the zero balance system. "We want to cut down on the loopholes in the existing system. In order to save the commuters trouble and ensure that the amount available in their smart cards is not blocked, we are thinking of introducing this system."

Many commuters who travel in BRTS belong to the economically weaker section of society. They cannot afford to spend Rs75 on the smart card and recharge it just to maintain the minimum balance.

BRTS is now planning to introduce the zero balance system, in which the commuter will be able to travel till the balance in the card reaches zero.

The issue of introducing this system will be raised at the next board meeting of AJL scheduled this month-end. If the decision gets approved, it will take around a month to change the settings of the flag barriers to enable commuters to enter or exit the BRTS bus station.
