“In fact, the BJP and the BSP are much like birds of the same feather that flock together. One party has nourished the corrupt for its years in power, and then dumped them on the eve of the elections. The other has quickly lapped up these discards, and claimed that they have been purified the moment the entered its fold,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
On the issue of corruption, the Congress feels that it has put the bad days of the Anna movement behind it. So shedding its defensive posture, the Congress hopes that it has managed to set the agenda for the forthcoming assembly polls in UP by bringing in the Lokpal Bill.
“The party which sets the agenda takes advantage. This time agenda has been set by us. We not only brought the Bill but also got it through in the Lok Sabha, where we had numbers. But BJP, which had been piggy riding on the Lokpal issue is now on a weak footing since it opposed the Lokpal Bill tooth and nail in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha,” said a senior Congress leader.
The party also feels the BJP got trapped in its own game by opposing Lokayuktas. “Having Lokayuktas in states was a crucial demand of Hazare. But while we were the ones who went by the sense of the house and included that in the Bill, the BJP opposed it which makes it clear they do not want Lokayuktas in states,” said the leader. The Congress feels the latest defectors from BSP into BJP are further going to give enough ammunition to it to hammer its campaign against BJP.
