A tribal woman of Vadodara district has regained her speech, three years after she had lost the use of her voice after her TB affected husband set her on fire.

A doctor of SSG Hospital, Vadodara, where she is undergoing treatment, was left wondering on Thursday morning when the woman uttered, "Bahu J saru chhey," to the doctor's inquiry as to how she was.

Mangu Niak, hailing from a remote village of Devgadh Baria talika in Vadodara district has been undergoing treatment at SSG (Shree Sayaji General) Hospital for the last four months. "Four years ago, Mangu's husband Andhar Niak, who was suffering from tuberculosis, had set her on fire while she was sleeping. She was seriously injured in the incident and one of her hands got stuck to her chest," sources said.

Andhar's illness had reached an incurable stage and he was worried about Mangu's life after his impending death. So, to save her from misery, the husband had attempted to kill Mangu, added sources.

A seriously burnt Mangu was admitted to a local hospital.  Meanwhile, Andhar died of TB within a week of this incident and the couple's son also died of a snake-bite a few months later.
All this left Mangu shell-shocked and she was rendered speechless. Despite receiving treatment for almost three years at the local hospital, her hand could not be separated from her chest, nor could she be cured of her speech-loss.

However, Anandi, an NGO, got Mangu referred to SSG before just before last Diwali. She was admitted to plastic surgery ward of the hospital where Dr Kinnari Vyas successfully separated her hand from her chest by performing a complex operation.

Hospital sources said that the resident doctors and ward staff had taken meticulous care to ensure that Mangu did not fall prey to other infection during and after the operation.

Mangu's words on Thursday morning created a festival like atmosphere in the ward. Doctors and nurses were seen smiling at their success and with the satisfaction of curing almost a destitute tribal woman. Mangu's relatives were devoutly offering prayers in a temple on the hospital premises.

Sources said that Mangu is expected to be discharged from the hospital very soon.
