Aerial survey in Orissa districts before anti-Maoist operation

BSF's special director general, RK Medhekar stressed on change of strategy particularly after the recent deadly attack by Maoists in Dantewada district of neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

Aerial survey was being made over forests prior to launch of anti-Maoist operations by security forces in Orissa's Koraput and Malkangiri districts which were close to Dantewada where the Naxals massacred over 70 CRPF personnel on April six.

Since Dantewada was barely 40 km from Malkangiri, the Maoists could repeat a similar action here also. So an aerial survey was being done, BSF's special director general RK Medhekar said.

Medhekar recently visited sensitive pockets in Malkangiri district where the Maoists were believed to be running a parallel administration, police sources said.

During talks with officials of CRPF and Orissa police, Medhekar stressed on change of strategy particularly after the recent deadly attack by Maoists in Dantewada district of neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

Medhekar underlined sharing of intelligence by the state's Special Intelligence wing, BSF and CRPF.

Proper information on hideouts of Maoists was difficult to gather as they regularly changed them, Medhekar was informed by the police.

Director of Intelligence Prakash Mishra, IG (Operations) S Marik, CRPF IG M Nageswar Rao, BSF IG AK Jain and Orissa police's south western range DIG Sanjeev Panda also held discussions with Medhekar.
