Adulterated tea powder being sold in Goa: FDA

Goa Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has said that chemical tests on tea bags sourced from Kolkata and Assam-based firms confirmed that "adulterated tea powder" was being sold in Goa.
    
Authorities said today that tests conducted on the suspicious tea powder, confiscated from a wholesaler, showed that it had been coloured.
    
Oil-soluble colour was found in the tea powder, Assistant Drug Controller, RY Arlekar, told PTI. Adding colour is banned under Food Adulteration Act, 1964.
    
Arlekar said the department will now prosecute the wholesaler and also, possibly, the companies which manufacture the tea powder.
    
In a raid conducted on May 3, 580 bags of five kg each of Kolkata-based Ruby brand and Assam-based Sona brand tea powder were confiscated from a storage facility in Usgao village.
