You may associate Bopal as a hot spot for realty projects, but the rise in real estate development has not translated into improved civic amenities for the area.

Even after two years of its merger with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), lakhs of Bopal residents are still waiting for even basic amenities like road and drainage network among others.

A visit to the shabby, narrow and encroached roads of Bopal is enough to make anyone realise that apart from some high rise building projects no town planning scheme for the areas has been approved by the government. To convey their anger against Auda's callous attitude towards Bopal's development, members of Bopal gram panchayat recently submitted a memorandum to Auda CEO Mamta Verma.

“The authorities told us that Auda doesn't have the fund to start work on basic civic amenities in the area. The only civic work they are doing is on the main drainage line,” said Anjana Patel, sarpanch of Bopal.

Patel said that Auda is yet to come up with a drainage network that can be connected to residential colonies. “Residents of the area are still dependent on cesspits as there is no drainage connection. Auda taking over Bopal has not made any difference as far as development work is concerned,” said Patel.

The sarpanch said that it is a difficult situation for Bopal residents as Auda officials cite one or the other reason for not improving civic amenities and the gram panchayat does not have the power to do so.

“When we put up a proposal to improve the water distribution line, the government officials said it was Auda's responsibility and the gram panchayat need not worry,” said Patel.
