Ahmedabad-based Adani Foundation has launched a special scheme for upliftment of people belonging to Mundra taluka in Kutch district.

The scheme envisages providing financial assistance to 500 fishermen of the coastal taluka for purchasing fishing equipment. The country's first private state-of-the-art port has been set up by the Adanis at Mundra. They are also developing a multi-product SEZ and the country's biggest power plant.

"Our Ahmedabad foundation is helping the needy section of the society, especially in Mundra where the corporate body has diversified projects. We recently funded drip irrigation by providing 25 percent subsidy to the farmers of the taluka. We felt that the fisher folk were another key community of this coastal taluka and decided to help them and earmarked Rs4 crore for the purpose. We distributed first installment by giving coupons to 400 fishermen who had gathered at a special function presided over by top Muslim cleric of  Muslim dominated Luni village, Pir Ali Asgar Saheb," Niranjan Engineer, head of the corporate communication at Mundra Port and SEZ told DNA on Monday. The financial assistance of Rs10,000 would be provided per head.

He said that the foundation people had conducted a survey for the purpose by circulating a questionnaire and filling in the form for them because of their inability to do so.

He said that Adani Foundation CEO Sushmaben Oza in fact showed the willingness to train the young fishermen for different trades during off-season.

Elaborating this, Engineer said that the foundation was ready to pay fees for ITI courses and helped seventh-standard dropouts to prepare themselves to directly pass SSC. He said the foundation was already helping their womenfolk by providing them with sewing machines.

He said that their foundation had already constructed an approach road to the old GMB port and fish landing sheds.

The children of the fishermen were also provided with educational facilities including a sport school for them. He said similar facilities would be developed at Luni village and two other villages.
