Erode district is facing acute water scarity following failure of the monsoon and the situation in three blocks is said to be grim.

“Erode district is now facing severe water scarcity, the district administration along with the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board is taking all steps to provide water supply to all areas. But we could not achieve the goal, as the rainfall during the season is too low when compared to previous years”, TWAD officials said.

In the dry tracts of Anthiyur, Ammapet, Nambiyur and Perundurai the ground water level has depleted deeply and in other places, the water table is seen one thousand feet below.

The officials said the Total Dissolved Salt (TDS) level in many areas is too high. Local bodies and Government have sunk thousands of borewells, but many could not be used due to the increase in TDS level.

The Bhavani and Cauvery rivers too are polluted by effluents let out by  tanners and dyers, the officials said on the occasion of International Water Day observed yesterday.

Meanwhile,  there is brisk sales of 20 litre water cans.
