Access to education needs to be augmented: Tamil Nadu governor

Living in a society where education was the basis for all growth and development, it was necessary that the access to education should be augmented, Tamil Nadu governor Surjit Singh Barnala has said.

Increasing access to education was imperative, and there was the need to create awareness on education among the rural people in villages, so that school dropout rate can be checked through special drives, Barnala, said after distributing books to corporation and government schools at a function here last night, organised by the city police.

He said education was the key to remove poverty and wipe out social inequalities, juvenile crimes and offences. It was a welcome step that Coimbatore city police has identified poverty as the main source of crime, and has taken a long term project of solving poverty by providing education to the poor and thereby reducing the crimes, he said.

Barnala exhorted others to take similar initiatives so that a society with more educated people and ample opportunities to establish their lives was created.

Unesco respresentative Armoogam Pasuramen, appreciating Tamil Nadu government's decision to organise World Classical Tamil Conference here next year, said that his organisation has been contributing to the growth of all languages, and would definitely extend its co-operation for the Tamil meet.

Union communication minister, A Raja, State rural industries minister, Pongalur N Palanisamy, city police commissioner, P Sivanandi and district collector, P Umanath were among those who spoke.
