It was supposed to be a nightmare for the biker gangs. However, the 'big' Tuesday night eventually gave the 200-odd city cops on duty very little to cheer about, and proved quite an anti-climax after all the excitement.
The cops had been deputed on city streets to catch the gang of bikers who have been speeding and creating nuisance for residents since the last few days. The bikers, with their sophisticated bikes and a tendency to vroom past commuters, have been spreading panic in the city.
On Tuesday night, city police officials deputed under sector one areas like Vastrapur, Ghatlodia, Navrangpura, Ellisbridge and Gujarat University police station among others, thronged the Satellite police station. At around 11 pm, sector top cops JCP Satish Sharma and deputy commissioner of police Brajesh Jha personally instructed the cops to kick off a massive operation to catch the speeding bikers.
Accordingly, the force stationed themselves on the roads. Apart from the sector one police, officials from the detection of crime branch (DCB), traffic cops and even officials of the special operation group (SOG), among others, were involved in the operation.
"We carried out the operation till dawn but managed to catch very few bikers," said Brajesh Jha, DCP of zone 1. He added that the operation may continue, but with a different modus operandi.
