The Bhaskar Group launched its book 'Women of substance' at The Grand Bhagwati on Sunday. The book, which profiles 50 resilient and independent women across Gujarat, aims to pay tribute to women who play a pivotal role in the lives of people around them.

While some Gujarati women are climbing the ladder of success, there are also those who are quietly enduring the violence afflicted by this male-dominated society. And the ever-widening sex ratio, which reflects on the fact that the Indian society is still prejudiced against females, stands evidence to this. There are 933 females per 1,000 males in India according to the 2001census, which is much below the world average of 990 females. There are numerous problems and challenges that women in India face every day and which have become a part and parcel of life their women.

However, in striking contrast to these women who epitomise 'self-sacrifice' are the educated and determined women who are ready to face every challenge coming their way. They are strong, resolute, undaunted and most importantly confident about revolutionising the society and eradicating its evils. Divya Bhaskar profiles such strong women who have multifaceted personalities and are, indeed, worthy of being called 'women of substance'.

Among the various female dignitaries present for the book launch were Avilasha Sanghvi, Homi Vyarwala, Tejal Amin, Esther David, Tina Handa, Ruzan Khambata, Ishria Parikh, Marinisa Desai, Parul Sheth, Avaben Desai, Archana Shah and Dhwani Sharma.

"Women in Gujarat are remarkable in a way that they not only stabilise their lives, but also manage to bring about a difference in the lives of those around them. This book very beautifully articulates the invaluable achievements of these women," said Manjula Subramanyam, chief guest of the event.

The book is expected to reach bookshelves by next week and will be made available to readers for Rs300.
